7 Signs That a Student Needs a Therapeutic School Placement
Our clinicians and teachers go beyond helping students manage their symptoms to get through the day. We help students get their development back on course to set them up for success in the real world. Here are some typical signs that a student needs a therapeutic school placement.
- Behavior – Firstly, your child may need help regulating behavior in and out of school and needs more assistance throughout the school day
- Current Schools Lack of Resources – Your child’s current daycare or school may not have the resources of staff trained to properly assist your child throughout the day. For instance, many traditional schools in the Chicagoland area unfortunately don’t have enough staff to give one on one instruction to your child.
- Difficulty With Aggression – The aggression may be towards others and/or self (tantrums, outbursts, self-injury)
- Avoidance – school, academic and social avoidance. In addition to difficulties in the school building, you child is a student who struggles with avoidance. They may spend an inordinate amount of time avoiding going to school. When they are in class they withdraw and disengage to a point where it develops into a problem.
- Problematic Reactions Toward Others – These are reactions that are based on misperceptions that feel real. Some students can be oversensitive to others and experience criticism or rejection even when teachers and peers are responding to them benignly.
- Socially Appropriate Responses – Similarly, your child may need assistance developing socially appropriate responses inside and outside the classroom.
- Autism Spectrum – Your child is on the spectrum, is receiving ABA therapy, and they need a different learning environment. Their school experience needs to be tailored more toward their specific developmental growth. It is possible the interventions in their current school isn’t working and a change is needed.
