Occupational Therapy at CTCA

Occupational therapists are experts in all things fine motor, sensory processing, play, self-care. They also specialize in all the other tasks or activities that children participate in daily. Within the Chicago Therapeutic Children’s Academy (CTCA), we offer both individual and group occupational therapy sessions to target these areas of development.

Occupational Therapy - Individual Session

Individual sessions:

An occupational therapist can work with a student within CTCA by pushing into the child’s classroom setting. This allows the child to fully participate in their classroom’s daily routines and tasks. They will experience 1:1 support and intervention from a skilled occupational therapist. The therapist can support the student in a variety of ways. Ways including, prompting age-appropriate fine motor skills during tabletop work, helping to facilitate social skills during group play, and/or adapting the child’s environment or workspace to best accommodate their individual sensory needs.

Group sessions:

At CTCA, children participate in an occupational therapy group on a weekly basis. One of our occupational therapists leads a group to promote different types of development. Fine motor development, sensory processing, visual motor, and/or self-care skills. Each child receives 1:1 support from classroom staff while participating in these activities. The children benefit from the direct occupational therapy intervention everyday. Our classroom staff are able to learn and implement helpful strategies to further support the students across multiple areas of development.

Above all, pediatric occupational therapists (OTs) help children master daily life skills with ease and efficiency. The “job” or “occupation” of a child is to play, use tools such as crayons, scissors or utensils. Children are also tasked with interacting with their environment, adults, and their peers effectively. CTCA is staffed with not just highly trained and skilled OTs, but houses a team full of learning specialists, speech pathologists, physical therapists, feeding therapists, and behavior therapists. Everyone works together  to support each child’s individual needs and help them reach their maximum potential!
